Maritime Falls to Mitchell

SUNY Maritime took a 2-0 lead but couldn't complete the upset Saturday evening, falling to host Mitchell College 3-2 at the Yarnall Athletic Center in New London. The Privateers opened the match with a 25-22 victory before taking the second set 25-13, putting themselves one set away from their first win of the season. Mitchell responded with a 25-20 win in the third and a 25-23 victory in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set.

Maritime's offense was led by Laci Werner, who delivered a 19-kill, 22-dig double-double. Addison Weist also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Ashley Pavarini added 10 kills and 12 digs. Mikaela Thiel nearly joined them, finishing with a career-high 48 assists and nine digs, while Joan Anastasiades recorded a career-best 20 digs. Emma DeMuro added seven kills while hitting .462 for the Privateers.

The deciding fifth set remained close early before Mitchell created separation with an 8-1 run that turned a 5-5 tie into a 13-6 advantage. Maritime fought back with two straight points and later trimmed the deficit to 13-8, but Mitchell finished the comeback with a 15-8 fifth-set victory. The Privateers actually finished the match with advantages in total points, 101-100, and digs, 86-78, but Mitchell's late runs proved decisive. Mitchell's Cimber Jenkins recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 13 digs and 16 assists, while Jaslene Flores led all players with 25 digs.
