The United States Merchant Marine Academy and FDU-Florham battled to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field, with the Mariners responding quickly after the Devils opened the scoring in the second half. USMMA controlled the match for much of the opening period, generating 11 shots compared with just three for FDU-Florham. Colin Robertson created several of the Mariners' best opportunities, putting two first-half attempts on target, but FDU goalkeeper Michael Battista kept the game scoreless at halftime.
FDU finally broke through in the 61st minute when Karan Chauhan finished a chance off an assist from Branden Ferreira, giving the Devils a 1-0 advantage. USMMA answered just over three minutes later, as Robert Derwin found the back of the net in the 64th minute to bring the match level. Derwin's goal was his second of the season, while Robertson continued to be a major part of the Mariners' attack with a team-high five shots and three shots on goal.
Neither side could find the deciding goal during the final 25 minutes. FDU nearly regained the lead in the 83rd minute, but USMMA goalkeeper James Castoro made a key save on another attempt from Chauhan. The Mariners then had a late opportunity of their own when Robertson tested Battista in the 85th minute, but the FDU goalkeeper made the stop to preserve the draw. USMMA finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and 7-5 edge in corner kicks, while Castoro recorded two saves and Battista finished with four.
