USMMA Fights Western Connecticut to a draw

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Western Connecticut State on Thursday night at the Westside Athletic Complex in Danbury. The Mariners entered the matchup looking to build on their season-opening result and quickly showed they could compete with the Wolves, who came into the contest 1-0 after a season-opening win over Westfield State. USMMA took the lead just before halftime when Stella Newman scored in the 42nd minute, finishing a chance set up by Hailey Catolico. The goal sent the Mariners into the break with a 1-0 advantage despite West Connecticut holding a 9-4 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes.

West Connecticut increased the pressure after halftime as it searched for an equalizer. The Wolves continued to generate opportunities and eventually found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute, when freshman forward Leah Tomeo gathered a rebound and fired it into the net for her second goal of the season. USMMA goalkeeper stood tall throughout the match, making seven saves as West Connecticut finished with 15 total shots and eight shots on target. The Mariners continued to create chances of their own, putting five of their seven shots on frame and forcing four saves from the West Connecticut goalkeeper.

Neither team could find a winning goal during the final 18 minutes, leaving the two sides deadlocked at 1-1 at the final whistle. The match was evenly played in several statistical categories, with both teams earning four corner kicks and committing eight fouls, while USMMA held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal despite West Connecticut overall advantage in shots. Newman provided the Mariners' lone goal, while Catolico contributed the assist and USMMA's goalkeeper made a key seven-save performance to help secure the draw. The result moves USMMA to 0-0-1 on the young season, while West Connecticut moves to 1-0-1.
