Manhattanville University women’s soccer earned its first Skyline Conference victory of the season Wednesday night, defeating Old Westbury 2-1 at Panther Park. The Valiants struck first in the seventh minute when freshman Jazleen Vega scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Jenna Moraglia. Old Westbury answered just 24 seconds later, with Jamie Garcia Sorto finishing a breakaway following a pass from Zamira Yamileth Mena Sequeira to make it 1-1.
After the fast start, the match settled into a defensive battle through the remainder of the opening half. Manhattanville held a 3-2 edge in shots at halftime before taking control offensively after the break, outshooting the Panthers 9-2 in the second half. The Valiants finished with a 12-4 advantage in shots and 9-2 edge in shots on goal, while Old Westbury goalkeeper Kristen Gallagher made six saves to keep the Panthers within reach.
With the match still tied late, Manhattanville found the breakthrough in the 88th minute. Vega delivered a corner kick that Moraglia headed into the net for the game-winning goal, giving Manhattanville the 2-1 victory. Vega finished with three shots, all on target, while Gabrielle Billetz made one save for the Valiants. The win moved Manhattanville to 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Skyline play, while Old Westbury dropped to 1-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
