Farmingdale State College women's soccer picked up its second straight victory Saturday afternoon, edging Gettysburg College 1-0 in the opening day of the Hyatt Place Showcase at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Rams found the breakthrough late in the match to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Senior forward Kayla Mendez provided the decisive moment with just 3:13 remaining. Mendez collected a pass from sophomore Katelyn Nunziato at the top of the penalty area before sending a 23-yard strike past the Gettysburg goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Nunziato, Mendez and freshman Natalie Strekowski each recorded a shot on target for Farmingdale State.
The Rams also received a strong performance in goal from sophomore Charlotte Hoina, who recorded seven saves to preserve the shutout. Farmingdale State used 25 players throughout the match and held Gettysburg off the scoreboard for its first clean sheet of the season. The victory gave the Rams their second consecutive win decided in the final minutes after their 2-1 victory over Westfield State on September 6.
