USMMA Coach Shields Winter Interview

USMMA Coach Shields Winter Interview

1-      Currently you are on a 4-game winning streak and seem to have great momentum going into the second half of the season, how do you prevent winter break from stalling your momentum?

Great question! I'm sure many teams are also contemplating this issue. Our team has a directive while on break to not only enjoy time with family and friends, rest/decompress from our strenuous academics, but to also continue working on their cardio throughout their time off. We want to keep moving forward without taking too many steps backwards. Keeping in shape helps to hopefully hit the ground running when we return.

2-      Your one loss in conference was in a thriller against Manhattanville by 1 point, how did you get your girls back on track after that?

Every game matters and conference games before the break are always tricky. We just have to learn from each game and continue to improve in ways we fell short.

3-      What would you grade your season so far?

I'd say we are right where we should be at this point in the season. Our gals have been working so hard and we are proud of the daily strides we make. There is always room for improvement, but their overall success has been a product of their daily efforts on and off the court.

4-      Currently you have 3 players averaging over 15 points (Barton, Grasseler and Ramsden), how have these three players grown as leaders this season?

Our team has many leaders besides these 3 scorers. What's been fun to watch is how each of them leads our team in different ways. Hannah is our captain, but other members lead as well. We have our academic captain, our more vocal leaders, our PG's leading us on the court, our regimental leaders, etc. Our team is exactly that, a TEAM. We only work when each member contributes and sometimes those intangibles aren't seen on a box score.

5-      What are your main adjustments you are making going into the second half of the season?

Not necessarily an adjustment, but I'd say we'd like to keep working on consistency with taking care of the ball.

6-      Lastly and most importantly, what would be the single best Christmas gift you could receive this year? (Not basketball related)

Always health! Our team's health, my health and the health of family and friends is always at the top of my list.
