UMSV comes back to win over John Jay

The University of Mount Saint Vincent opened its 2026 men's soccer season Tuesday night with a 3-1 comeback victory over John Jay College at Marillac Field. John Jay struck first in the 18th minute, putting the Dolphins in an early hole, but UMSV responded with consistent pressure and eventually found the equalizer just before halftime. Brandon Brad Leon finished off a pass from freshman Justin Sorto in the 42nd minute, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1. The Dolphins finished the match with an 11-8 advantage in shots, setting the stage for a stronger second half.

UMSV came out of halftime with noticeably more control and turned its pressure into the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute. Sorto, making his collegiate debut, delivered the biggest moment of the night when he found the back of the net to put the Dolphins ahead 2-1. The freshman forward's impact went beyond the goal, as he also assisted on Brad Leon's first-half equalizer to finish with a goal and an assist in his first collegiate appearance. Junior Marti Senyer was also active throughout the match, leading UMSV with three shots as the Dolphins continued to push John Jay's defense backward.

With John Jay searching for an equalizer, UMSV added an insurance goal in the 78th minute when Senyer scored to extend the lead to 3-1. The Dolphins' defense and goalkeeper Joey Wiant then held the advantage over the final stretch to secure the season-opening victory. Wiant made two saves in his first collegiate start, while UMSV's ability to limit John Jay's opportunities helped the Dolphins close out the comeback. After falling behind early, UMSV responded with three unanswered goals and begins the season 1-0 heading into Saturday's home matchup with William Paterson.
