St. Joseph's vs New Paltz ends in a draw

St. Joseph’s University Long Island men’s soccer battled to a 2-2 draw with SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at John A. Danzi Stadium in Patchogue. The Golden Eagles erased a two-goal deficit in the second half to earn a point in their season opener, matching the Hawks at 0-0-1.

New Paltz struck early and often in the opening period. David Lamour opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a feed from Brandon Dhanoolal, and Kieran Weber doubled the lead in the 22nd minute on another assist from Dhanoolal. St. Joseph’s managed just two shots before the break but responded after intermission. Jack Deutsch cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute with help from Jack Pulisic, then Liam McDermott equalized in the 80th minute on a Deutsch assist. The Golden Eagles finished with a 10-8 edge in total shots (5-6 on goal) while both sides recorded five corner kicks. Goalkeeper Dean Burchard made four saves for St. Joseph’s, and Joe Washington stopped three for New Paltz.

Several yellow cards were issued as the physical match intensified late, but neither side could find a winner. St. Joseph’s will look to build on the resilient comeback when it hosts Cortland on Saturday.
