Farmingdale or Yeshiva
Who should be the preseason favorite?
Farmingdale and Yeshiva are almost unanimously predicted to be the top 2 teams for the Skyline Conference this year. Both played in the finals last season, and both had a great opportunity to win that game. As up to this point of the season Farmingdale is 6-1 and Yeshiva is 1-5, so obviously Farmingdale should be the preseason favorite right? Well, it’s not exactly that simple, both teams can make a case for their position, and today we will try to lay out both.
First Farmingdale, they are 6-1 and have a few key victories. Their best win of the season was against #11 Wesleyan; Wesleyan remains in the top 25 of D3 basketball and is a signature win for Farmingdale. Their only D3 loss is to Cortland who is consistently one of the best teams in the region and who are currently 4-1 with a very tough schedule, even in that game it came down to the wire with Farmingdale only losing by 1 point. Farmingdale also gave Stony Brook a run, only losing 66-59 to the D1 Team. Farmingdale has played a pretty tough schedule thus far.
Now Yeshiva, Yeshiva has played one of the hardest schedules in all of D3 basketball. Although they are 1-5, they have played 3 teams in ranked in the top 5 of the country and University of Mary Washington who was ranked 15th in the country. Their one win comes against a team that very well could be ranked, NYU. Yeshiva’s strength of schedule is the hardest in the Skyline so to just look at the wins and losses does not paint the picture.
Now to the players,
First Yeshiva, Yeshiva has one of if not the best player in the conference in Zevi Samet. Samet is averaging 24 points and 4.2 rebounds against the hardest of competition in D3. He is followed by Yoav Oselka who averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds and Or Sundjyvsky who brings in 10.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. With that being said Yeshiva is very dependent on Samet, he is the scoring center of their offense, and the team heavily relies on him. With that being said, Yeshiva has height and many stretch forwards who provide great defensive and rebounding options for the team.
Now Farmingdale, Farmingdale is a bit more spread out in the scoring department with 4 players averaging double digit points. Michael Notias averages 14.1 points, 4.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds, while Sean Conroy averages 13.9 points, 4.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds. Liam Buckley averages 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds, with Jordan Tucker averaging 11.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Farmingdale as a new leading scorer almost every other game, they are well balanced scoring the ball and have big’s able to rebound.
Both teams have a clear chance to win the Skyline Conference along with a few other teams, but there is no doubt these are the two favorites. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but we conducted a poll among players and staff that we could get a hold off and the poll resulted in 58% picking Farmingdale as their number 1 ranked team while 42% picked Yeshiva.
This should be a really fun year, and we would love to hear what you think!
